Abruzzo
The region is rich in natural beauties and history, but is only just starting to be discovered by mass tourism. Abruzzo's wealth of castles and medieval towns, especially near the town of L'Aquila has earned it in some quarters the nickname of "Abruzzoshire", by analogy with the "Chiantishire" nickname sometimes used to refer to the Chianti area of Tuscany

Where to go

L'Aquila

Although less than two hours' drive from Rome, the city has not yet been heavily affected by foreign tourism. L'Aquila is a popular summer resort and in the cold winter the city welcomes a great number of skiers, mainly Romans, who stay in town while skiing at nearby resorts. L'Aquila lies at the foot of the highest peaks in the Apennines.

Teramo is situated near the confluence of the Vezzole torrent with the Tordino River (that's why the Latin name of Interamnia, between rivers), and is a very old city, founded in pre-Roman time, though the general aspect is more recent, due to many XIX-XX century buildings.
